Marina Berlusconi publicly denies alleged conspiracies by her family against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. She also denies that the Cavaliere’s heirs are dissatisfied with how Antonio Tajani is leading Forza Italia.
The president of Fininvest and the Mondadori Group intervenes with a letter sent to the newspaper The Republic late this morning, Wednesday 18 September, in response to a behind-the-scenes story published in today’s edition of the newspaper.
“I know well,” he writes, “that stemming the flow of rumors and indiscretions is a very difficult, if not impossible, practice, but I cannot continue to tolerate alleged reconstructions that have no contact with reality whatsoever.”
The article in question, signed by political commentator Concetto Vecchio, speaks of an alleged “push” by Gianni Letta – Silvio Berlusconi’s long-time advisor – in the “pro-rights turn of Forza Italia”. But not only that: it also reports that within the Berlusconi family there would be “disesteem” towards Meloni and “dissatisfaction” with the work of Antonio Tajani as leader of the party.
“In both cases, exactly the opposite is true,” assures Marina Berlusconi.The Republic – he adds – even goes so far as to distort the content of meetings that are part of my role and my work, transforming them into absurd secret meetings that would hide science fiction political plots”. The reference, in this passage, is to the visit made by Mario Draghi last week to the manager’s home.
“It’s all very fascinating, I admit: almost intriguing,” observes Berlusconi. “But also twenty thousand leagues away from the truth. Yes, the truth… In an age of fake news and uncontrollable chatter, does it still count for anything?”
“I continue to think – concludes the daughter of the former prime minister – that the reality of the facts retains a value. And that the ‘behind the scenes’ can have a meaning only when and if, from behind the stage, they describe a real scene. Not a theater, or rather a little theater, which does not exist”.
