Amnesty International Brazil said it was following with concern the removal of prosecutors Simone Sibilio and Letícia Emile from the task force created by the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) to investigate the murders of councilwoman Marielle Franco and her driver, Anderson Gomes. In a statement, the organization demanded answers from the Justice and complained to the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, for not responding to the invitation to a virtual meeting to deal with the case.
“Three years without answers about who had Marielle killed and why, is too long. During this period, four different delegates took charge of the investigations. Those accused of being responsible for the execution of Marielle and Anderson, Ronnie Lessa and Élcio Queiroz, have not yet been tried by the Jury Court. Any and all suspicions that the investigation might be undue interference should be investigated,” Amnesty International said in the statement.
On Wednesday, the 7th, police chief Moysés Santana also left the case, replaced by Henrique Damasceno as head of the Homicide Police (DH) in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. This was the third delegate change since the investigations began.
The MPRJ said yesterday that the two prosecutors asked for the removal of the case, but did not reveal the reason. On social networks, federal deputy Marcelo Freixo linked Simone and Letícia’s decision to the winning denunciation of Júlia Lotufo, widow of Adriano da Nóbrega, who was killed by the police in Bahia.
He was accused of links with the “Escritório do Crime”, a militia organization in Rio de Janeiro. Júlia Lotufo is under house arrest for criminal association and money laundering and has agreed with the Public Ministry to reveal, in a winning plea, relevant information about crimes committed by Adriano. There is an expectation that something will be said about the murders of Marielle and Anderson.
“It is essential for the authorities to be able to dialogue with the families of victims of human rights violations, as well as with the organizations that support them, so that they can demonstrate what measures they have taken,” said the organization.
