Colombian María José Marín showed her mettle to reach the quarter-finals of the US Women’s Amateur, considered one of the Majors of women’s amateur golf in the world.
According to the criteria of
Marín, just 17 years old, beat American Maisie Fischer in the round of 16 of the tournament in an exciting match play duel.
The Colombian was three holes down on the 9th and two down on the 15th. However, in a spectacular comeback, she won on the 16th, 17th and 18th to win by 1up.
Earlier, Marín beat one of the favorites, fellow American Rachel Kuehn, in the round of 16, 3/2 (three holes ahead against two to play).
This Friday, Marín, born in Guanajuato (Mexico), but daughter of Colombian parents and resident in Cali since the age of 3, will play for a place in the semifinals against the American Anna Davis, starting at 1 p.m.
Marín finished in the medal position by finishing in first place in the first phase of the tournament, with the medal play system (stroke play), with a cumulative total of 138 strokes (-4).
Marín seeks second title for Latin America
Now, she is looking to become the second Colombian and Latin American to win the tournament, after María José Uribe, who won the 2007 edition, beating American Amanda Blumenherst in the final by 1up.
She could also be the third Colombian to reach the final. In 1996, Marisa Baena reached the final round of the tournament, where she lost 3/2 to local Kelli Kuehne.
