Opposition leader María Corina Machado called this Tuesday (2) for a “worldwide protest” for next Saturday (6) against what she classified as an “electoral blockade” imposed by the Venezuelan regime, in relation to the presidential elections scheduled to take place on July 28th, which she is prohibited from participating in.
In a message released through her profile on , who will “run” for a third consecutive term.
“We have to make the world listen to us, we have received very important support and we have to continue moving forward […] We will not allow Nicolás Maduro to choose the candidate he will face, because we, Venezuelans, have that right”, he said.
Machado also asked Venezuelans living abroad to contact the country's consulates to register to vote in July, a process that has suffered delays in several countries.
“This Saturday, April 6, the world must see Venezuela united, firm, determined to move forward on the path to freedom,” he added, without specifying the cities where the protests could be held.
Machado, elected in the primaries as a candidate for the largest opposition platform, cannot run in the elections due to the political disqualification imposed against her by the Chavista regime. Such disqualification prevents the opponent from holding public office until 2036.
The former deputy proposed philosopher Corina Yoris as her replacement, but she was also blocked, without any legal justification, by the National Electoral Council of Venezuela (CNE), the Chavismo-controlled body responsible for elections in the country.
According to United Nations (UN) estimates, 7.7 million Venezuelans live outside their home country, a number disputed by the Caracas regime, which claims it is just 2 million people. (With EFE Agency)
