Genoa – In Genoa the “March of Memory” to commemorate the deportation of the Jews, which began on November 3, 1943 “one of the darkest dates in the history of the city”. The participants, some hundreds, met in front of the Carlo Felice entrance. From here they had to march to the synagogue where a short ceremony was scheduled but the weather alert has upset the program and the march will not be held. They organize the Genoese Jewish community and the Sant’Egidio community.
Over fifty Jews were captured in the first days of November in Liguria. On 1 December they were sent to Milan and from there by train to Auschwitz. Overall 261 Genoese Jews were deported. Only 20 returned.
The mayor of Genoa was present at the ceremony Marco Bucci: “I didn’t want to miss it because the city wants to give a signal. – said the mayor – I apologized several times on behalf of the administration for what the Municipality did not do at the time to prevent this tragedy ”. “Memory is important, when I see the writing with my name next to the p38 I think we will have to do something to prevent this. – added the mayor – We need culture, we need a system to not allow it ”.
Participants are Monsignor Marco Tasca, archbishop of Genoa, and Ariel Dello Strologo, president of the Jewish Community of Genoa. Also present were the commissioner and the prefect.
“We thank Sant’Egidio and the Jewish community for this day. Remembering is important for the passing of the baton ”: said the commissioner Ilaria Cavo, representing the Region.
Dello Strologo announced the laying of four stumbling blocks which will take place on January 14th. They will report the names of Albino Polacco, keeper of the synagogue that November 3, 1943, of his wife and two children.
Monsignor Tasca said: “We believers in the face of evil ask for forgiveness from God and our Jewish brothers. But even the most absolute evil did not have the last word. Cardinal Boetto helped the Jews who asked for help for a sense of friendship that unites our faiths. Here, today we renew that pact of friendship ”.
The prayer in memory of the victims of the chief rabbi of Genoa closes the ceremony.
