At the Mexican Olympic Committee they ask me, what if we hold another Olympics in our country? I answer why not? If we can. If President Andrés Manuel López Obrador authorizes, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said this Thursday, who outlined that it could be in 2036.
The head of the Mexican diplomacy attended the signing of the COM Action Agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Thank you Olympic athletes!!! I will take your proposal to hold the Olympic Games in Mexico. If President López Obrador authorizes it, we will do it. Congratulations to the President of the Mexican Olympic Committee, Mary José Alcalá, Olympic diver!!”, declared the secretary of Foreign Relations.
In his message, Ebrard commented that the Mexico 68 Olympic Games began to be prepared more than 25 years before, almost 30.
“And we almost didn’t make it at the time of the vote, eh? Many countries didn’t support us, they said: like Mexico, man? The Olympics are very difficult,” the foreign minister told the young athletes.
“When we began to manage it, they told us Mexicans at that time, our diplomats, diplomats told them: how do you think if you have just been in a revolution? How are you going to hold an Olympics? That’s just the developed countries, the powerful ones, not you”.
Ebrard pointed out that those animated generations, with immense confidence in the destiny of Mexico, did not allow themselves to be daunted and in the end they won the vote, the Olympics were organized and today it is still considered one of the most successful in history.
“That was done by those who preceded us in sports, diplomacy, and politics, and they succeeded. So, today we want to vindicate, recover that spirit, that resolution, that conviction,” the foreign minister stressed.
“Our president, President López Obrador has said: Mexico’s success lies in self-confidence, that nobody convinces us of anything else. We are a great civilization, we can achieve what we set out to do,” Ebrard noted.
“It may be that we are late, it may be that it will take time, it may be that there will be a lot of adversity, but without a doubt we will achieve it.”
Foreign Minister Ebrard raised then: Why does Mexico have medalists? And he was resentful: for the effort they have, the teams, the people, the coaches, the coaches, the people; “That’s why Mexico has a prominent role in international sports.”
“Well, couldn’t we bring another Olympics to Mexico? Why not?” Secretary Ebrard said, of whom López Obrador has said that he has defended the country well.
“He says… our president says: we are undergoing a transformation of national life. And an important part of that transformation is how we see ourselves. Why shouldn’t we do it? Well, let’s do it, let’s propose it, let’s organize ourselves.”
“Hey, but it’s going to take us 20 years”; There are going to be many elections, huh? Many polls, many primaries, many things are going to happen, it is long-term, it would have to be in 2036. 2036, we are in 2022,” the official said.
Ebrard calls on the athletes to make the proposal so that it can be taken to the President, and if he authorizes it, start working with the entire presence of Mexican diplomacy, “so that we have the Olympic Games in Mexico in 2036.”
