Real Madrid struggled to overcome Elche in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey and the worst thing about the match for the Whites was not that they needed an extension but Marcelo’s expulsion. The Madrid captain received the red card in the first part of extra time for a more than debatable foul on Tete Morente.
“In the 102nd minute, the player (12) Vieira Da Silva Junior, Marcelo, was sent off for the following reason: Knocking down an opponent and thus preventing an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Once sent off, he addressed me in the following terms: You are very bad,” wrote the referee of the match, Figueroa Vázquez, in the minutes.
Due to the expulsion Marcelo will lose a game, but then they could lose him from two to three in the best of cases for his words towards the referee. The Single Competition Judge will be the one who has to decide on this matter.
If the lateral considers it as contempt, he is exposed to a minimum of two more games according to article 117 of the Disciplinary Code and which says the following: “Address the referees, managers or sports authorities in terms or with attitudes of contempt or disregard always that the action does not constitute a more serious offense, it will be sanctioned with a suspension of two to three games or for a period of up to one month.
However, if the Judge decides that the behavior of the alter is contrary to the sporting order, then article 122 would apply: “Those whose conduct is contrary to the good sporting order will incur a suspension of up to four games or a fine of up to 602 euros when they qualify. as light”.
In both cases, as Marcelo has no record, he could lose one to two games, more than the expulsion, three in total that he would play in the Copa del Rey. At the moment the Brazilian will surely lose the quarter-final match against Athletic and depending on the sanction and if Madrid manages to go to the semifinals the first leg and maybe also the second leg, so he would not play until a hypothetical final.
However, Real Madrid is going to appeal the refereeing report both in the case of the Brazilian and in that of Toni Kroos since they consider that Marcelo touches the ball and according to several repetitions of the realization he does not touch the Elche player, Tete Morente.
