Last summer suggested Lamborghini the Countach LPI 800-4 for, a tribute to the iconic supercar that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The modern version is based on the Sian, which itself is derived from the Aventador, but whose V12 is supported here by a (mild) hybrid system at 48 volts.
The Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 clearly struck the right chords with the target audience, because the planned 112 units have all been sold in the meantime. However, the party model was less popular with Marcello Gandini, the legendary designer of the original. This is apparent from a press release from the now 83-year-old Italian, who also bought many other Lamborghinis at Bertone, such as the Miura or the Espada, but is also the spiritual father of iconic models such as the Ferrari/Dino 308 GT4, the Lancia Stratos. , the De Tomaso Pantera or the Alfa Romeo Montreal.
bland decoction
In the communiqué, which was sent out through his daughter’s PR agency, the former Bertone designer says that the reinterpretation does not fit the spirit of innovation with which he drew all his designs. In a nutshell: he thinks the Countach LP800-4 is just a bland marketing hoax.
What seems to bother Gandini most, however, is that he believes Lamborghini has given the impression that he has contributed to the development of the new model, or at least given it his blessing. In a filmed interview with him on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Countach, current Lamborghini designer Mitja Borkert offered him a miniature version of the modern interpretation.
In the press release, Marcello Gandini says he accepted the gift as a courtesy, but was never told at any point that a production version would be made. It will probably be worst for the 112 buyers of the Countach LP800-4…
