On social media, Brazilians recalled the history of racism against Vinicius Junior and criticized his choice of words
Brazilians criticized the Spanish newspaper Mark after the outlet published, this Thursday (3.Oct.2024) a cover with the words “Noche Negra” – black night, or dark night, in Portuguese – along with a photo of Vinicius Junior. Internet users considered the choice of words bad, given the history of racism against the Brazilian player in the country.
The newspaper highlighted the defeats of Real Madrid (by Vini Jr.), Girona and Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Read some reactions:
In a statement published last Saturday (September 28), La Liga said it would no longer tolerate episodes of racism in matches. On Tuesday (Oct 1), Real Madrid accused La Liga of omitting information about racist attacks in Sunday’s derby (Sep 29) against Atlético de Madrid.
The information was published by the newspapers “As” and “Marca” – the latter is the same one that published the cover this Thursday. The league confirmed that it had received Real Madrid’s complaint. Before the merengue team’s protest, the Spanish league had reported 11 episodes of racist chants during the game.
