Again the scourge of racism appears in sport. During the Third RFEF match between Motril and Marbella, a group of 20 people seriously insulted Papa Palick, a Senegalese player who plays for the Marbella team. The player, very affected by what happened, wanted to leave the field of play, but finally decided to continue. The match ended 2-1 in favor of the Granada team.
Marbella has decided to denounce what happened through an official statement where the reference that the match referee, Juan Antonio López Romero from Jaen, made in this regard is also attached. He points out that a group of 20 people addressed the player who was continuously and rudely called “monkey”. This is the statement.
The Marbella Futbol club condemns and publicly denounces the very serious and repeated racist insults uttered from the stands of the Escribano Castilla stadium against our player Papa Malik during the CF Motril-Marbella FC match played yesterday, Sunday, February 27. Likewise, we inform that the match minutes recognize the incidents as follows:
“In the 68th minute, before executing a corner in favor of the local team, a group of fans from about 20 people located behind the goal in which the launch was going to be executed, located on the right according to the locker room exit and identified as fans of the local team by the field delegate they addressed the visiting team’s number 8, Don Dieng, Papa Malick in the following terms: “Monkey, monkey, monkey” repeatedly. This player, visibly affected, wanted to leave the field of play, but several teammates convinced him to continue playing the game and I guaranteed him that if this happened again, I would suspend the match permanently. Finally, he kept playing the match”.
The statement continues as follows. “Our entity is going to proceed to denounce the facts in defense of our playerry of all those who feel discriminated against due to race, sexual orientation or any retrograde attack within a soccer field protected by the Sports Law.
No athlete should be publicly racially abused while playing a game. The damage sustained in these circumstances is profound and irreparable. Resuming the match was grossly irresponsible because Malick was not in a mental or physical condition to continue competing. The only reason the player continued to play was fear of administrative defeat.
It is everyone’s task, clubs, federations, arbitration bodies and fans, not to hesitate to firmly confront this scourge. Those who justify or detract from scenes such as those that occurred yesterday they are accomplices of it.
Marbella FC wants to show its full support to Malick. We will fight this time and always against racism and any type of discrimination so that these types of events end definitively. We will demand that what happened yesterday receive an exemplary response from the institutions, which we understand is the only way to contribute to the eradication of racism in sport and in society in general.
no to racism
