This year, the Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry are closely related. While the physics one rewarded the physical bases of machine learning, the chemistry one distinguished one of the most scientifically important applications to date of this machine learning, and this is new, all of it carried out in a private company, Deep Mind. Machine learning cracked the protein-folding problem and won the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry by Marc Zimmer.
Sticking with chemistry, this is like performing ultra-precision surgery using a light scalpel. Using light to replace an oxygen atom with a nitrogen atom in a furan molecule.
What mathematics contributes to the technology of particle accelerators, highlighted by one of its creators: New linear optics of particle accelerators using Moebius transformation by Victor Etxebarria.
You have to admit it. Nuclear energy has obvious benefits. Nuclear rockets could travel to Mars in half the time by Dan Kotlyar.
Mapping Ignorance is a collaborative blog written by active researchers and technicians focused on the latest research results in any scientific field. It is an initiative of the Chair of Scientific Culture of the University of the Basque Country and its Campus of International Excellence. If you want to be a collaborator, ask me for more information here.
Chemical. I work at Euskampus Fundazioa with the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU, for which I edit the Notebook of Scientific Culture and Mapping Ignorance. I write things for the Donostia International Physics Center and the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics.
