Putin’s war continues to claim human lives – peace talks have so far come to nothing. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy is addressing his people and the world public via social media.
According to the United Nations, more than 100 civilians have been killed in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In addition, more than 300 bystanders were injured, said the office of the UN human rights officer Michelle Bachelet in Geneva. Russia denies accusations that it is attacking civilian facilities.
Meanwhile, Russian troop movements continue. According to statements by Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, the Russian military blew up substations near Kharkiv, as the Ukrinform agency wrote. This is said to cause problems with the electricity and water supply. The Unian news agency reported that the upper floors of two skyscrapers had been destroyed. The information could not be independently verified.
In the Sumy region in the north-east of the country, there are also said to have been major losses on both sides. The Ukrainian anti-corruption portal Antikor wrote of possibly 70 dead on the Ukrainian side and a large number of victims on the Russian side. Russian artillery hit a military unit. The information could not be independently verified. According to the Unian agency, the Ukrainian army wants to have destroyed around 100 Russian military vehicles in the Sumy region.
“The evil must be stopped immediately”
A Russian military convoy heading towards the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv is said to be around 40 miles long. This is shown by satellite images published by the Unian news agency. This means that the column is longer than previously assumed. Consisting of tanks and other military vehicles, it stretches from Hostomel airport in northwest Kiev to the village of Prybirsk, which lies between Kyiv and Chernobyl.
The Ukrainian military assumes that Belarusian troops are now also on their way to Ukraine. “Some units of the most powerful formations of the Belarusian Armed Forces have begun to move to the state border of Ukraine in the direction of Volhynia,” wrote the Ukrainian General Staff on Facebook. Again, this information could not be independently verified. Volhynia is a region in northwestern Ukraine.
“This is Ukraine. Here is Europe. Here is the year 2022. The evil armed with missiles, bombs and artillery must be stopped immediately. Economically destroyed. To show that humanity can defend itself,” Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said in a video message shared on Facebook and his Telegram channel late Monday evening.
He also called for Russia’s exclusion from the UN Security Council. “A state that commits war crimes against civilians cannot be a member of the UN Security Council.”
No breakthrough in negotiations
The peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, opened by Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makej, ended on Monday without a breakthrough – the meeting on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border lasted about six hours.
Ukraine has not yet achieved the desired result, Zelenskyy said. “Russia has presented its positions, we have put forward counter-arguments to end the war.” As soon as the delegation is back in Kyiv, they will analyze and decide how to proceed in the second round of negotiations. dpa
