The mangaka Ken Akamatsu officially got a seat in the Chamber of councilors Japanese: in a tweet published by Akamatsu himself, the author announced that he was the first cartoonist in Japan to get a seat in the legislature.
Known for the series of Love Hina and for Negima! Magister Negi Magi and the sequel UQ Holder! Magister Negi Magi! 2Akamatsu approached the world of politics in 2011, claiming that the planned changes to the copyright law would harm the market for dōjinshimanga and other products published independently.
In 2013, however, the author came into conflict with the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party), of which he is now a member, to push for a review of the amendments to the law against child pornography which, as inaccurate, risked preventing the representation of minors at all in works such as manga and anime. And the controversy does not end there: even this year, Akamatsu has shown disagreement with the organ of United Nations to protect women’s rights “A Women“, Which, according to the author, requires changes which, if not managed rationally, would drastically affect the creative freedom of many artists.
Whether or not you approve of the conduct of this author, who seems to constantly move on rather rough terrain, questioning important and necessary initiatives, it is surprising that in a country with such defined hierarchies as Japan, a character from the entertainment world has succeeded successfully to switch to politics, reaffirming once again how much entertainment constitutes one of the most important themes of our reality in today’s world.
