Sickness absence is increasing exponentially due to the strict quarantine measures. As a result, there is a risk of unemployment in the workplace.
The employers’ association AWVN warns about this. Absenteeism rises to 12 percent, according to a survey among employers. ,,Normally this is less than 5 percent”, said Jannes van der Velde of the AWVN.
Due to corona and corona-related complaints, absenteeism has already risen to 8 percent. The failure due to mandatory quarantine is now added to this.
Empty shelves
The supermarket industry previously warned against empty shelves because many staff are obliged to quarantine if colleagues are found to be infected. “Other sectors that will be affected by this are retail, healthcare, industry and construction,” says Van der Velde.
In the AWVN survey, four out of ten companies indicate that they are unable to supply goods and services due to staff shortages. In the metal industry, even three quarters of the companies state that production is lower due to lack of personnel as a result of the quarantine measures.
Workload
Of the companies surveyed, 85 percent indicate that the workload is increasing due to the high absenteeism due to illness. And the workload is already high in many sectors because it is difficult to find new staff. If you have to work even harder, the risk of overloading and therefore failure increases further. This threatens to create a vicious circle.
The strict measures lead to major economic damage. Reason for employers to argue for less strict rules. ,,Every day less mandatory in quarantine is already an improvement”, emphasizes Van der Velde. “Now the economy can open again and companies cannot benefit because the staff is at home.”
Support base
It is not just about more flexible measures for employers. “We also strongly advocate for simplifications. Employers can no longer keep up with the speed at which measures are changing.”
The call for relaxation is not only motivated by economic interests. “You can see that support for strict measures is declining. People have had it a bit with all the limitations.”
