In the United States, a man was released after serving almost 20 years in prison for a murder in which his twin brother confessed. About it informs New York Post.
Kevin Dugar was released from jail on bail in Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday, January 25th. The man was convicted in 2003 of killing a member of a rival gang, but in 2016 his twin brother Carl Smith said that he was the one who committed the crime.
In 2018, a court ruled that Smith’s words were not credible, as at the time of his confession, he was already serving a 99-year sentence for a robbery in which a child was badly injured. During the consideration of Smith’s application, the prosecutor said that the criminal had nothing to lose, his words did not cause anything but skepticism.
However, the Center for Unfair Sentences at Northwestern Illinois University drew attention to the case. Human rights activists managed to get Dugar’s sentence reviewed.

“The Court of Appeal concluded that there is a strong possibility that, after considering all the evidence, the jury is likely to find Kevin not guilty,” Dugar’s lawyer said.
Until the second consideration of the case, Dugar will be under the supervision of law enforcement agencies. “He is very happy to be released and is gradually getting used to the world, which has changed a lot in the 20 years that he spent in prison on false charges,” the lawyer added.
Earlier it was reported that in the US state of North Carolina, a man who spent 23 years behind bars on false charges will receive large compensation. The court decided to pay him six million dollars (440 million rubles).
