Last summer, a 22-year-old Amsterdammer was arrested on suspicion of plotting an assassination attempt on outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte (VVD). Yavuz O. is due to appear in court in The Hague next Wednesday because the judiciary suspects him of threats, incitement with terrorist intent and plotting an assassination attempt. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirms this on Wednesday. O. was active in the Telegram channel De Batavian Republic, which was closed on Monday by the Public Prosecution Service.
Conspiracy theories and threats against various administrators circulated on the Telegram channels, including Rutte, the mayor of Bodegraven and RIVM director Jaap van Dissel. According to the indictment, O. wrote in the group chat that he was looking for weapons and gunmen. He also suggested an attack on Rutte from a car. “Open the window. Gun out. And just pop,” he wrote in December last year. Less than six months later, he predicted that there would be a “civil war.”
O. also urged other group users to “storm parliament” and “with deadly force that stuff” [te] clearing”. A little later, he wrote in the group channel that he was looking for “warriors”. “Serious people who want to do that. Who are fed up and demand their freedom.” O. stated that he was not looking for “protesters” but for “revolutionaries.” Justice suspects him of preparing an attack on several politicians, including Rutte.
