SAO PAULO (Reuters) – A man was shot dead on Saturday after a clash between Palmeiras fans who watched their team lose to Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final, Brazilian police said.
The man, who police said was an off-duty prison guard, was shot outside Sao Paulo’s Palmeiras stadium, where thousands of fans had gathered to watch the match on big screens.
Chelsea beat the Libertadores champions 2-1 after extra time in the game in Abu Dhabi.
“There were some outbreaks of fights between fans, which unleashed a riot and a man was shot,” said a statement from the São Paulo Secretary of Public Security.
The riot police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. One man was arrested, according to the statement.
The footage will be analyzed to identify others involved in the disturbances, police said. Police forces remain in the area monitoring to prevent further disturbances.
Palmeiras aimed to win the annual tournament for the first time and join state rivals Corinthians, Santos and São Paulo, who have won the trophy disputed between the world’s top clubs.
