A fire service operation in Hamburg takes an unexpected turn: First, the rescue workers take care of the fire and a man with burns. But then shots are fired.
Hamburg – A man was fatally injured during an operation by the special operations command (SEK) in Hamburg. As a police spokesman said this morning, the officers were alerted shortly before midnight by residents “due to a male person behaving abnormally”. When the emergency services arrived in the Rahlstedt district, the man is said to have suddenly shot at the police from his balcony. A special operations command team was then called in for reinforcements.
According to police reports, the man then shot at the special forces. The police shot the man, but he died of his injuries at the scene, the spokesman said. The background to the incident in the Rahlstedt district was initially unclear. No further details about the man were released. A homicide squad was called in.
Before the police arrived, the fire brigade had its hands full at the scene: they had been called to a fire where people’s lives were in danger. “One person had apparently set another person on fire in a bed,” said a fire brigade spokesman. The victim was treated by the rescue services; he had inhaled smoke and had burns on his face.
At that point, the team was still able to work normally and bring the injured person into the ambulance. “And then things got “interesting”. Shots were fired at the scene and the firefighters withdrew.” Several media outlets had previously reported that the shooter had set his father on fire. The fire department could not initially confirm this. dpa
