Lake Giacopiane in Italy: Man goes into the water despite bathing ban – and dies
According to Italian media, Gabriele Zolezzi from Santo Stefano d’Aveto in Liguria went on a trip to Lake Giacopiane with a friend on July 20. The lake in northwest Italy, which is located near Borzonasca at an altitude of around 1,000 meters, serves as a drinking water reservoir for the surrounding communities and towns. The accident occurred when the two men were looking for a cool down between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Zolezzi died in the lake – on his 38th birthday, of all days.
However, the Italian media have reported differently on the exact circumstances of the accident. According to the local newspaper Genoa Today Zolezzi is said to have climbed into the reservoir despite a swimming ban due to quicksand and never resurfaced. It was reported that the man knew the area and the lake very well. This makes his death all the more puzzling.
Tragedy in Italy: Quicksand apparently pulled day-trippers under water
The news portal fanpage.it reported that the 38-year-old jumped into the water and was literally swallowed by the quicksand. A different account was given by the local media First the LevantAccording to this, the bricklayer and his friend were standing on the shore of the lake with only their feet in the water.
According to police reconstructions, Zolezzi’s feet got stuck in the ground and he suddenly sank under the water surface. His friend only noticed this late. Although he was stuck himself, he was able to free himself and make an emergency call. But help came too late for Zelozzi: after an hour-long search, divers were only able to recover his dead body. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. The death of a tourist from Bavaria in Italy is just as tragic: 20-year-old Chiara drowned in Lake Iseo, but her body has not been found to this day.
