An Indian has had a doppelgänger bitten to death by a cobra in order to collect his own life insurance policy. Prabhakar Bhimaji Waghchaure, 54, faked his own death for a benefit of 4.3 million euros.
The Indian, who lives in Rajur in the western state of Maharashtra, had a poor man who looked like him murdered in April this year with a bite from a cobra. The snake bit the man on the toe. The body was then moved to Waghchaure’s home and an ambulance was called.
The fraud was discovered after the life insurance company involved asked the police for an investigation.
Police found that people close to the man were giving conflicting information. The officers also checked phone calls and discovered that the man was still alive. He had previously pretended to be his own cousin when his alleged body was identified at the hospital. Another man also identified the dead as Waghchaure.
Death of wife
The man and four accomplices have been arrested. The American life insurance company was already suspicious because it had faked the death of his wife four years earlier. Police say Waghchaure lived in America for 20 years before returning to his home country in January. That worked to his advantage: very few people really knew him.
The dead man has been identified by police as Navnath Yashwant Aanap (50).
