Intoxicated holidaymakers have not been uncommon on Mallorca for years. An initiative is now declaring war on the “drink tourists” – and is taking action.
Mallorca – Many dream of a holiday on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Summer, sun, beach and sea – what could be nicer? The holiday paradise has also been extremely popular in Germany for decades. However, also among the so-called “drink tourists” from the Federal Republic and other European countries.
Numerous holidaymakers are drawn to El Arenal, to the Ballermann, year after year. There is partying until you drop, often in the truest sense of the word. The alcohol consumption of these tourists is enormous. And a thorn in the side of the residents and some of the Mallorcan tourism providers.
Mallorca: Initiative fights “booze tourism” on the island – so far without success
An initiative founded by local entrepreneurs in 2016 called “Palma Beach” has been trying to change the image of the holiday island for several years. They want to get away from “booze tourism” and become more attractive for discerning holidaymakers.
Also due to the corona pandemic, it became much quieter in Mallorca. But that changed again at the latest with the easing of the corona measures. “As soon as the big party temples were open again, this new type of vacationer was pushed out by the old party audience,” said Juan Miguel Ferrer Majorca newspaper: “Since then we have suffered from the arrival of large groups of tourists just looking to get drunk on the streets, on the promenade or on the beach.”
Mallorca: drinking tourism at Ballermann is “worse than before Corona”
Ferrer is the manager of the initiative for more quality in Playa de Palma. He even feels that the current tourism around the Ballermann in Mallorca is “worse than before the Corona pandemic”. According to his observations, some vacationers arrive at the hotels around 10 a.m. in the morning. They let it rip right after arrival and drink so thirsty that many can no longer leave by 2 p.m., he told the newspaper Ultima Hora.
The loud celebrations go on well into the night. According to Ferrer, the tourists are still in a party mood at 4 a.m. Sometimes megaphones are used to make matters worse. It is inexplicable to Ferrer why these would continue to be freely sold. And quite a few holidaymakers who get drunk almost to the point of unconsciousness are simply left drunk on the street by their friends.
Mallorca desperate for “booze tourism”: “We already consider the season lost”
“We already consider the season lost in terms of excess control,” Ferrer said Majorca newspaper. He called on the Mallorcan police to take tougher action. The stricter rules must also be enforced on the streets, Ferrer said. In fact, there has also been a dress code at Ballermann for some time. Some of the restaurants prohibit overly casual clothing, including sleeveless shirts, flip-flops, swimming trunks, (slinky) disguises, “booze shirts” and football shirts.
Apparently it didn’t do much. The drunk Ballermann fans flood the beaches of Mallorca. And are apparently more party-happy than ever. It is possible that some of the tourists believe that there is also an acute need to catch up on alcohol consumption after the Corona compulsory break. (kh)
