Evangelical pastor Silas Malafaia stated this Wednesday, 9th, that he made peace with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) after harshly criticizing the former president’s stance in statements to the press. At the end of the first round of municipal elections, held on Sunday, the 6th, Malafaia said that Bolsonaro had “dubious” behavior in the campaigns in São Paulo and Curitiba.
To the EstadãoMalafaia stated that he had exchanged messages with Bolsonaro since Tuesday, the 8th, the day the statements had repercussions. The evangelical pastor said that the former president was “annoyed”, but reinforced the idea that he made a mistake by not showing support for Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and Eduardo Pimentel (PSD), candidates who receive the support of the PL in São Paulo and Curitiba, respectively.
“He was upset, naturally, if he wasn’t upset, he wasn’t a human being. I showed him my reasons and said that no one wanted to see the good side. I said that he has gasoline, that he has history and that he will not be crucified because of a mistake,” said Malafaia.
Malafaia also said that, in exchanging messages with Bolsonaro, he reaffirmed his support for the former president. The evangelical pastor also highlighted that he had already explained his opinions to the clan before the repercussions of the statements.
“I told him: ‘I continue to support you, but I didn’t say anything that I didn’t say to you and your children’. It was a ‘zap’ exchange, nothing more. He knows he can count on me, but that I am independent and an opinionated person”, said Malafaia.
In an interview with Estadão this Tuesday, Malafaia classified Bolsonaro’s behavior in the elections in Curitiba and São Paulo as “dubious”. Even with the formal support of the PL, the former president distributed nods to Cristina Graeml (PMB), who will face Pimentel in the second round, and former coach Pablo Marçal (PRTB), who finished third in the dispute for mayor of São Paulo.
“Enter Bolsonaro and his children’s social networks. (During) The entire campaign, there was not a single word of support for Nunes. It’s as if the São Paulo election didn’t exist. What talk is this? Bolsonaro is a leader and I continue to support him, but he made a stupid mistake. (…) Which leader is this? A mixed signal for the people? Leader takes the lead, leader gives direction”, said Malafaia.
In an interview with the newspaper Folha de S.PauloMalafaia considered that Bolsonaro was “cowardly” and “missing” in not emphatically supporting the candidates formally supported by the PL. “Who’s going to make an alliance with a guy who can’t be trusted? What he did in São Paulo and Paraná was a shame”, said the pastor to columnist Mônica Bergamo.
Also this Tuesday, Bolsonaro countered the criticism made by the evangelical pastor, who became one of his closest allies after his departure from the Presidency: “He turned on the machine gun, but that will pass. I love Mafalaia. Nobody criticizes ugly women.”
The former president’s children also reacted to Malafaia’s speeches. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) stated that “dirty laundry is washed at home” and pointed out that Bolsonaro’s support for Ricardo Nunes was essential to take the emedebista to the second round in São Paulo.
“Dirty clothes are washed at home, not in public. (…) President Bolsonaro did what had to be done, at the right time, and was decisive for the scenario in São Paulo. If it weren’t for Bolsonaro, Ricardo Nunes wouldn’t be in the second round,” said the senator.
On social media, councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) classified the criticism made by Malafaia as an “absurd attack”. Despite this, the former president’s son “02” said that the evangelical pastor “has his respect”, despite the fact that “he is extremely angry for some reason”.
“You have my respect, even if you are extremely angry for some reason and make some mistakes, now attacking my father in an absurd way. I wish from the bottom of my heart much peace and health. A big hug”, published Carlos.
To the EstadãoMalafaia gave affection to the former president’s children and stated that peace with them has also been sealed. According to the religious leader, the responses given by the two were natural given the nature of the statements.
“I would be ashamed if someone did what I did to my father, to confront him, and I remained silent. I was going to say something. But you see how they responded very respectfully to me. I have already spoken to them”, said Malafaia.
