The news that Mexico will have a female head of state for the first time spread quickly, occupying the covers of numerous international media.
“Claudia Sheinbaum makes history by being the first woman elected to govern Mexico”, headlined The New York Times, highlighting the historic impact of this election. CNN also dedicated its main headline to this event with the phrase “SHEINBAUM WINS THE PRESIDENCY”.
From London, the BBC highlighted Sheinbaum’s triumph in one of its main news stories, with a forceful headline: “Claudia Sheinbaum sweeps the election and will be the first president of Mexico.” This emphasis on the historical novelty of her election reflects global interest in this significant change in Mexican politics.
Like various international media, the leaders of countries such as Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and more celebrated the triumph of Shinbaum, who will become the first president of Mexico.
In addition to the media, several international leaders celebrated Sheinbaum’s victory. From Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed on social networks: “Historic election of Claudia Sheinbaum as President of Mexico. We wish her success in her administration, the first of a woman in that position”. For his part, the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduropraised the participation of citizens in the electoral process and congratulated Sheinbaum: “A great turnout in the presidential elections. I congratulate this noble people, their President-Elect Claudia Sheinbaum”.
Maduro also took the opportunity to recognize the leadership of the current Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, describing him as a great leader and reiterating his congratulations to the Mexican people.
