We recently received on trial Majority Eddingtona portable radio that supports both FM broadcast radio and the latest DAB standard, and in this review I’ll tell you how it went.
Majority is an English company born in Cambridge with the aim of making quality products, but suitable for all budgets. Their debut took place in 2012 with a bluetooth speaker and since then more than 50 products have been launched including radios, speakers, sound bars and much more.
In fact, in Majority Eddington it is possible to find what is declared by the brand, but let’s go in order and start from the base, that is the contents of the package and the design of the product.
Package content and design
The packaging is very basic, externally we find the image of the product together with various information on the functionalities, on the back some interesting information is then reported: the first concerns the warrantyin fact it is possible to extend the latter to 3 years by registering the product on the official website within 30 days of purchase, the second instead concerns the initiative of the company, which claims to plant a tree for each product sold, thus purchasing any product of the company you can also contribute to making the world greener.
Inside we obviously find the radio, a USB-A to microUSB power / charging cable, a small leaflet regarding safety issues and a second small sheet that invites us to extend the warranty by registering the product and to download the manual available on the site. official, another choice made by the brand for eco-sustainability reasons.
Majority Eddington is a compact radio, the dimensions are 12 x 2.3 x 6.4 cm and the weight is 170 grams, you can easily carry it in your backpack or bag without getting too noticed.
The shape is rectangular and on the back there is also a small clip that allows you to keep the radio upright in a stable way, but in reality the shape of the product would allow you to place it on a flat surface even without the support in question without any problem.
On the front there is one LCD screen color with 4 keys below for navigation between menus and radio stations, while on the left there is the mono speaker. On the upper side we find a classic extendable antenna complete with a plastic support to close it during transport and 4 buttons that are used to select your favorite radio stations.
On the right side we find two buttons to adjust the volume and a 3.5mm headphone jack, while on the left there is the on / off switch and the input for the microUSB cable. The absence of a USB-C cable is a bit out of place, but it must be considered that we are not talking about a product launched in 2022 but on sale since May 2019, so it is still an acceptable feature even if not cutting-edge.
Below I propose a complete unboxing.
FM and DAB radio and bluetooth speaker if necessary
As mentioned above, through Majority Eddington it is possible to receive both radio stations broadcasting via FM and those broadcast via DAB and DAB +, the reception is very good and you can easily listen to the radio even at home, without even having to extend the antenna excessively. Outside the home the situation improves even more and you can easily have a clean audio, moreover using the DAB standard you can also view information on the screen such as the name of the song, as well as that of the station we are listening to.
Supported FM frequencies range from 87.5 to 108 MHz, while DAB frequencies range from 174 to 250 MHz.
The screen is an LCD without too many pretensions, it is not a particularly important component of the product and it does the essentials right, that is, it shows us the information about the radio station, the time and the battery status.
To navigate between the radio stations you can use the keys below the screen, with the arrows you can scroll through the available stations and with the ok key you can select.
By clicking on the mode button you can switch between the various FM, DAB and Bluetooth. The possibility of using the radio as a normal bluetooth speaker is much appreciated, it connects easily to a smartphone or other compatible devices and we can maybe launch our favorite playlist from Spotify or any other music service.
The quality of the speaker is not exceptional, you can easily listen to music without too many pretensions but it is certainly not a speaker for audiophiles, the main target of Majority Eddington is the user who mainly appreciates the radio and wants a compact and comfortable device to carry that allows you to quietly listen to your favorite radio stations.
On the upper part we find the telescopic antenna, which can be easily closed using the plastic support that holds it firm and just as easily removable and extendable; as I told you the reception is already good in a home environment, while outdoors it is really excellent.
The numbered buttons are used to save your favorite radio stations, so that you can quickly reach them. For save a radio station just hold down the button while you are listening to it, you can then record the frequency and reach it later with a simple press of the button. The first two buttons allow you to register a single station, while the third (which not surprisingly has a “+” next to 3) opens a complete list of 10 stations saved by the user and allows you to select one to listen to it quickly.
I have to be honest, the first two keys are super comfortable, while the third is not very straightforward and I didn’t particularly appreciate the fact that you open the list every time you press it, I would have preferred the navigation keys to quickly jump from one to the other. preset to the other.
In total, 20 presets can be saved, 10 for FM mode and 10 for DAB mode. Then there is the “menu” button that allows you to access the settings, you can change the language (Italian is present), the time and much more, you can also set an alarm, an extra feature that is certainly useful in some areas .
On the left side there is a switch button that allows you to turn the radio on and off, we also find the micro-USB input for charging the radio. There is no fast recharge but the recharge times are short given the drums from 1,900 mAh, moreover the autonomy is excellent, you can easily reach 9 hours of listening and depending on the volume and the type of use you can also do something more.
And if you find yourself in a context that does not allow you to listen to music at high volume, you can easily connect the headphones via the jack cable and enjoy listening in total tranquility.
Conclusions
What can I say, this Majority Eddington can certainly satisfy all radio lovers and in particular those with a slightly retro style. He reminded me a lot of a radio I had as a child, it still retains that design of the past, even if modernized, not only aesthetically but above all from a technological point of view.
It would have been interesting to have the possibility of using bluetooth to connect an external speaker, even if I must say that the volume of the integrated speaker is already more than sufficient even for outdoor use.
You can find it on Amazon for € 59.95 It is on official site.
