In the first scene of ‘Things to clean’ (or ‘Maid’), a 25-year-old girl runs away from home – and domestic violence – carrying her baby with just $ 18 to survive while looking for a job as cleaning lady and relies on bureaucratic social service. “You buy cleaning supplies,” the employer tells a woman on the verge of destitution. The miniseries is based on the book by Stephanie Land and is an overwhelming tale with Margaret qualley like Alex. “I grew up privileged. I certainly did, and playing a role like Alex just brings it out more. It really makes you evaluate how unbelievably lucky you are every day, ”the actress, Andie MacDowell’s daughter, told Elle.
For The Hollywood Reporter, Qualley has played a heroine. “For viewers fortunate enough to be unfamiliar with life in the lower class, ‘Maid’ offers a heartbreaking demonstration of how difficult it can be to get up on the media in a world riddled with bureaucratic traps, unsympathetic employers, no mention, in the case of Alex, a relationship so toxic that it threatens to drown all her sense of herself.

It is one of Netflix’s latest hits and could surpass ‘Lady’s Gambit’ in audience (with 62 million viewers in 2020). The miniseries is closer to independent cinema and has been produced by practically an entire female team; of the 5 directors, 4 are women. Oscar-nominated actress Margot Robbie is one of the executive producers through LuckyChap Entertainment production company. With his company, he also produced the five-Oscar 2021 nominated film Promising Young Woman, which won best original screenplay.
The violence that nobody sees
Alex seeks help, but denies that his situation is so dire. “I don’t want to take the bed away from someone who is experiencing actual abuse,” he says. “What does that mean?” They ask him in social services. “That they were beaten,” he replies. “And how is the fake abuse? Intimidation? Threats? Control?”. Not in vain will it be difficult for you to remember even your favorite color and choose your own clothes.
During 10 chapters, we will know what Alex thinks, his shame to ask for help and his frustration at not having taken advantage of the supposed privileges he had. He only ended an abusive relationship when he pulled broken glass out of his daughter’s hair. Sean (Nick Robinson) found him as “charismatic as he was self-destructive” with his own history of violence and neglect, but he does not excuse the violence that he used while drunk and that, when sober, limited his partner’s financial independence.
