Maeen Abdul-Malik, Prime Minister of the Yemeni government in Yemen, called on the “Hello Trust”, the largest humanitarian organization for demining in the world, to put more pressure on the “Houthis” to prevent the planting of mines in Yemen.
“The Houthi militia has turned the country into the largest minefield in the world, since World War II,” Abdul Malik said, during his reception yesterday, with the organization’s delegation.
“The internationally banned Houthi mines have become a threat to all sources of life, and their presence has claimed the lives of civilians, especially children and women, and is a vexing issue for the government and citizens,” Abdul Malik stressed.
He pointed out that the Houthi militia had deliberately deployed and planted mines indiscriminately and not documented with maps, which made it more difficult to detect and dispose of them.
Abdul-Malik stressed the need to intensify international and regional support in clearing mines to avoid more civilian casualties.
Yemeni government reports say that mines in the country have killed and injured thousands of civilians since the war began 8 years ago, accusing the “Houthis” of planting more than a million mines in various governorates.
