BRUSSELS (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron said he would seek further dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the next 48 to 72 hours on the situation in Ukraine and an initiative to help people leave the besieged city of Mariupol. .
Macron said he was coordinating with Greece and Turkey and hoped to convince Russia to allow people to withdraw.
Mariupol, a port in the southeast and a prewar city of 400,000, is among the hardest hit by Russian bombing. Tens of thousands of people are believed to be trapped, with little access to food, energy and heat, with the city around them reduced to ruins.
“There were concrete discussions this Friday with the mayor of Mariupol. We are coordinating and we will negotiate with the Russians,” Macron told reporters after a European Union summit in Brussels. “As soon as possible, hopefully in the next few days. I will have a conversation with President Putin in the next 48 to 72 hours to finalize the details. Is urgent.”
Moscow signaled on Friday that it was pulling back on its ambitions in Ukraine to focus on territories claimed by Russian-backed separatists, as Ukrainian forces sought to retake towns on the outskirts of the capital Kiev.
