French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, March 7, during the first pre-election meeting with voters in the commune of Poissy (capital district), said that it is necessary to respect Russia and the Russian people. The broadcast was on Twitter heads of state.
“It is necessary to continue the dialogue with the leaders, even stating differences, because one day we will have to return to the negotiating table. We must always treat Russia and the Russian people with respect,” the French leader said.
According to him, without Russia’s participation in building a “large-scale security architecture” of the European continent, it will not be possible to build a lasting peace. Macron stressed that history and geography oblige this.
“Our responsibility is to keep all the links that we can keep. We must continue to talk to the Russian and Belarusian peoples. We need to do this with the assistance of representatives of the world of culture, the scientific and technical community, non-governmental organizations,” he said.
The French president also noted that he does not expect a settlement of the situation in Ukraine in the near future.
“I think that in the short term hostilities will continue. But we will continue to talk with Russia,” Macron added.
According to the owner of the Elysee Palace, Europe will face big problems next winter if Moscow cuts off gas supplies.
The day before, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that France should maintain channels of communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin against the backdrop of the situation in Ukraine.
On February 24, Russia launched an operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. As Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified at the time, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
On February 21, the Russian leader signed decrees recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), as well as treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the republics. The documents were ratified the next day.
The situation escalated on February 17, 2022. The DPR and LPR reported heavy shelling by Ukrainian security forces, including heavy weapons. The republics announced a general mobilization and evacuation of civilians to the territory of Russia.
Since 2014, Kyiv has been conducting an operation against the inhabitants of Donbass, who refused to recognize the new government in Ukraine.
