French President Emmanuel Macron called on Thursday on “all parties to act to avoid war” in the region.
During phone calls with officials including Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Army Commander Joseph Aoun, Macron expressed his “deep concern after the series of explosions that contribute to a dangerous escalation of tensions in the region, putting civilians at risk.”
According to a statement issued by the Elysee, Macron stressed that “all parties must act to avoid war.”
The Elysee added that the French President called on Lebanese officials to “assume responsibility to avoid escalation, and to convey messages of restraint and moderation to all Lebanese parties.”
During the phone calls, Macron expressed his “deep conviction that security in Lebanon requires all Lebanese parties to prioritize the national interest, stay away from open conflicts in the region, and commit to the path of a diplomatic solution.”
The Elysee added, “It is their responsibility to ensure that there is a legitimate executive authority in Lebanon capable of responding to the seriousness of the situation.”
Since 2020, France has been engaged in efforts to reach a solution in Lebanon.
