Rome – Back-up missiles Stinger and Milananti-tank mortars, heavy and light machine guns, bulletproof vests, elements, rations k and bullets in large quantities.
The government is preparing the new decree on equipment and weapons to be sent to Ukraine, along the lines of the first. While in evaluation – after the point made today among the allies at the Ramstein summit in Germany – there is also a qualitative leap in the material to be sent to support the resistance against the Russians: we speak, for example, of self-propelled artillery.
The measures are top secret. The content of the next decree will be reported on Thursday by the Minister of Defense, Lorenzo Guerini, to Copasir. “The list has been classified in order not to put our country at risk and not to inform the person who is attacking the Ukrainian people”, specified the president of the Committee, Adolfo Urso. Two months of war have put a strain on the Ukrainian arsenal, even if continuously supplied by Western countries, the USA and Great Britain in the lead. Italy has therefore also put in place a second tranche of aid.
“There will be – announced the Minister of Defense, Lorenzo Guerini, from Ramstein – a new dispatch from the Italian side of military equipment, essential to continue supporting the Ukrainian resistance”.
The second decree, he added, will be of the same nature as the first, “on the basis of Ukrainian requests”. The strengthening of military assistance could be with a further measure, the subject of political evaluations – the Cinquestelle are holding back – but even those of the leaders of the armed forces who have the framework of the facilities available. In particular, the Defense General Staff, with the joint top operational command (Covi), led by General Francesco Figliuolo, is reviewing the possible options, also taking into account that land armaments have suffered an impoverishment in recent years.
Thus the Panzerhaubitze 2000, German-made self-propelled howitzer, used by the Italian Army, would not be present in sufficient quantity to be able to send specimens to Ukraine. More feasible is the shipment of self-propelled M109 artillery, howitzers that have a range of up to 15 kilometers. Then there are the M113 tracked vehicles used for public transport. Among the lighter vehicles are the Italian-made Lynxes, which are present in adequate quantities in the Army barracks.
