From 1 October 2021, until 29 October 2021, by 3 pm, the capital municipalities of metropolitan cities, including those of special statute regions, will be able to send their Expression of interest to become part of the first three pilot projects of services Mobility as a Service for Italy (MaaS). The so-called MaaS is a new concept of mobility that provides for the integration of multiple public and private transport services, accessible to the end user through a single digital channel. These services operate through “digital brokerage platforms”Which enable various functions in an integrated way such as information, travel planning and booking, unified payment for services, post-travel operations.
The MaaS is part of investment 1.4.6 of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), in the implementation of which the Minister for technological innovation and digital transition (MITD) and the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility (MIMS), aka the old MIT. The initiative aims to promote data sharing, reusability and interoperability of transport systems starting from large metropolitan cities, where the government expects the implementation of MaaS solutions to generate the greatest benefits.
The first selection will identify and finance three pilot projects which will also be supported through co-financing of the trials. Subsequently, seven other projects will be selected in so-called “follower” areas with respect to the large metropolitan centers, which will be project-supported by the three leading cities and also through co-financing of the experiments. Modernize public transport to make it easier and within reach of the citizen: this is therefore the goal of this initiative which if nothing else will spur Italian cities to imagine a less chaotic future, possibly more suited to a style of travel that will be different from today’s. In particular, great importance should be given to the project details on the electrical infrastructure for transport, especially as regards integration with other forms of mobility than those on wheels.
