Paris 2024, storm over the boxing match between Algerian Imane Khelif and Angela Carini. Speaks Vladimir Luxuria
On the sixth day of the Paris Olympics 2024 the case of the Algerian boxer Imane Khelif explodes, a woman yes, but with high levels of testosterone, and excluded for this from the last world boxing championship. The storm has mounted above all for the withdrawal after 46 seconds of our Angela Carini. An international case that intertwines sports and politics and questions the choices of the International Olympic Committee. “I know you won’t give up, Angela, and I know that one day you will earn with effort and sweat what you deserve. In a competition that is finally fair,” wrote Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on social media, who is in Paris today.
Even the English writer intervened JK Rowling, author of the successful series of novels on Harry Potter, claiming that “the Paris Olympics will forever be overshadowed by the brutal injustice done to Carini” because a “young female boxer had everything she had worked and trained for taken away because a male was allowed into the ring against her.”
He doesn’t share the same opinion Vladimir Luxuria, activist, writer, ex-politician and transgender who spoke on affaritaliani.it to comment on an event that she defines shameful and exploited. J.K. Rowling “And good with imagination – says Luxuria – but fantasy must be used to write novels, not to comment on reality”.
Luxuria, what do you think?
“Can I start with a joke? Salvini brings bad luck: supports Marine Le Pen and she loses, he is rooting for Angela and he jinxed her. Jokes aside, I think that all the people who started this controversy were rooting more for the Algerian than for the Italian, because if the Algerian had lost, their ‘unfair competition’ thesis would not have had a foundation. With Angela Carini’s withdrawal, instead, they will make a lot of propaganda and exploitation of us”.
In your opinion, was there a strong media pressure on the two athletes, enough to have influenced the withdrawal of the Azzurra?
Let’s say that both athletes had two types of different pressures. Angela knew she had to deal with afearsome opponentbut not infallible. Let us remember that Imane Khelif hasn’t always wonbut she lost several times. The Algerian, for her part, had a kind of shameful pressure why question his sexuality, as he did Minister Salvini calling her trans, while she is a woman… not that being trans is an offense, but in this case it’s not true. It’s fake news. Salvini must think before tweeting because a lot of stupid things are written, the problem is that he is a minister.
When he wrote the word trans it would have been enough to inform himself briefly. Imane Khelif is the Representative of Algeria which is a nation where the penal code provides for fines, sanctions, punishments and prison for both crime of homosexuality be it for that of transsexuality. If she had been born male, as some have wrongly implied, she would not have been able to make the transition in Algeria, she would not have been able to change gender or name. This is a high testosterone level which is variable. There are parameters in the hands of experts and they are the ones who have to say who can and cannot compete, not these politicians who improvise as sports judges. Everyone does their job and you can’t improvise something else.
What do you think of Angela Carini’s behavior in and out of the ring?
Angela Carini entering the ring has International Olympic Committee decision endorsed and started the match, although she withdrew shortly after. If a person accepts the challenge, it means that share the rules and admissibility. I hope you can overcome the temptation to be sanctified by a certain right wing who would like to make her a martyr of injustice.
What would you say to these two athletes, both Khelif and Carini?
TO Khalif I would say so don’t get too angry. All this controversy may have increased his aggressiveness even if his victory was ruled by the judges. Ad Angela I would say don’t give up, to get up again and to continue with her career which will surely give her other successes. For the record, I was rooting for her, for Angela.
A personal opinion, are you in favor or against the male-female division in sports?
Let’s take the case of a trans person who has transitioned from male to female, let’s consider hormones taken, weight, body mass, etc., In any case, it must be the experts who decide if the race is fair, not me, not Salvini. Obviously, then no one ever asks the question inverse problemthat is, if a woman transitions from feminine to masculine and, therefore, has a lower testosterone level. If she wanted to compete with men, no one would say that there could be a disadvantage. These athletes are so few that they had to invent trans.
JK Rowling writes that Carini, our Italian boxer, has “suffered a brutal injustice because a male was allowed to enter the ring against her”. What is your response?
She is good with the fantasybut fantasy must be used to write novels, not to comment on reality. It is so vulgar this whole story. Think they made a photomontage where they put some athletes in costume from the bathroom and, in the vaginal areathey applied the writing “I’m not a boy”. In the Italian campaign, however, they placed this false image next to it a photo mine (that I had done in a bikini) vulgarly retouched. In order to foment hatred, they go so far as to do these things. I don’t know what they have in their heads. I would like to know where are these people when discrimination at work, insults and violence against trans people happen, when they then talk about it only because there are the Olympics, making things up Moreover.
