BRASÍLIA (Reuters) – Former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s coalition with the Planalto has filed a request with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to order Twitter to withdraw fake news posts against PT’s candidacy.
In the request, the coalition argues that Twitter has not acted in the way it committed to when it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Electoral Justice committing to combating the spread of fake news. It also points out that the platform has the technical means to identify and map the accounts that propagate fake news.
The legal piece also lists a series of profiles that propagate fake news, such as those of the children of president and reelection candidate Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Carlos and Eduardo, of deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), the former president environment minister and elected federal deputy Ricardo Salles (PL-SP), and also elected federal deputy Delegado Ramagem (PL-RJ), among others.
“It is important to point out that most of the profiles that spread disinformation – as stated in several decisions handed down by this collendo TSE – are verified, have the ‘blue seal’. That is to say, they are profiles checked by Twitter”, points out the federation in the request.
“This situation raises the degree of perplexity in the face of the absence of curatorship, even in the face of several false statements conveyed by such profiles”, he argues.
“It is clear that the platform has an infinity of resources to face the spread of disinformation, which can occur, for example, as soon as the user publishes something widely, already denying by checking agencies and/or by the TSE itself. The adoption of such measures would, above all, avoid the immense dissemination and reduce the reach of untrue facts that affect the electoral process so much and unbalance the dispute between the candidates.”
