At a UN event, the president declared that climate finance is insufficient; he called for ambition and boldness to avoid a setback in sustainable development
The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Sunday (22.Sep.2024) that there is a lack of resources to “keep the planet safe” of climate change. He said that current levels of greenhouse gas reductions and climate finance are “insufficient”.
“At the COP28 climate change conference, the world took stock of the implementation of the climate change goals. Paris Agreement. Current levels of greenhouse gas emission reductions and climate finance are insufficient to keep the planet safe.”he declared in a speech at the “Summit of the Future”, at the UN (United Nations) headquarters, in New York.
The meeting, preliminary to the 79th General Assembly that will open on Tuesday (September 24), approved the Pact for the Future, a document that presents commitments to changes in the multilateral system, including topics such as sustainable development, peace, international security and reform of the UN Security Council. In his speech, Lula praised the commitment, approved shortly before his speech at the event. He said that the proposed advances will be “praiseworthy and significant”but charged “ambition and boldness” of the UN to avoid setbacks.
He stated that the pandemic, conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, the arms race and climate change “they expose the limitations of multilateral bodies”. For the Brazilian president, the bodies do not have the authority or means of implementation to “enforce your decisions”. He also criticized the lack of vitality of the General Assembly, the hollowing out of the Economic and Social Council and the lack of legitimacy of the Security Council, which “applies double standards or fails to report atrocities”.
