Faced with little support among the evangelical electorate, after a year and four months in office, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva began a tour of the States to try to attract the segment lost since the advance of Bolsonarism. The commitment, evidenced this Thursday, 4th, in the president's speech in Pernambuco, maintains the PT member's political logic – of, at the same time, fueling the polarization that marked the last electoral campaign.
In addition to trying to modulate the president's speech, part of the government's strategy is the launch of the “Faith in Brazil” advertising campaign, which will shine a spotlight on social programs. When inaugurating yesterday a project linked to the crossing of the São Francisco River, in the municipality of Arcoverde (PE), Lula cited God 11 times, the word miracle 16 times and mentioned faith in five moments.
He went so far as to classify the works of his government in the State as “miracles of faith”, shortly after criticizing those who “use the name of God in vain”. “I see the factory of lies that exists in fake news, which you follow. A rotten factory, it looks like a bunch of rubbish. It looks like a cesspool that only speaks lies, only preaches hate, only tells falsehoods, invents lies every day, which we cannot believe”, said the president.
“Because God is not a lie, God is the truth. And no one can use God’s name in vain as they use it every single day.”
The PT member's speech is a reaction to the support that religious leaders, mainly evangelicals, give to Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Lula is Catholic and often mentions God in his speeches. “The first question is whether you believe in God. And I wanted to ask if you believe in miracles”, said the PT member when referring to actions such as the crossing of the São Francisco.
Wave
In the new advertising campaign defined by the government, films will be shown that try to bring together management brands and, at the same time, make a nod to evangelicals.
The campaign will be regionalized and the basic concept was recently presented to executive secretaries and heads of press offices at ministries by the head of Social Communication, Paulo Pimenta, and marketer Sidônio Palmeira.
The idea is that, in this year of municipal elections, ministers will also start talking about government programs from all departments, and not just about their area, in an attempt to attract the attention of the poorest population, women and religious people.
Former leader of the PT bench in the Chamber, deputy Zeca Dirceu (PR) stated that “it will be good for Lula and for evangelicals” if there is a meeting between the president and evangelical leaders.
“I am part of those who support, pray and work for Lula to meet with evangelical leaders. It will be good for Lula, for evangelicals and, mainly, for Brazil to move forward”, said the deputy, who is the son of the former Minister of the Civil House José Dirceu.
Reverend Luis Alberto Sabanay, Presbyterian pastor and Policy advisor for the PT's National Secretariat of Popular Movements, assesses that the government needs to promote adjustments in the communication strategy to act more directly with evangelicals. In an interview with Estadão/Broadcast (Grupo Estado's real-time news system), Sabanay recognized the difficulty of the Lula administration in attracting part of this segment and said he believes that the Executive Branch should promote more dialogue with religious leaders. Sabanay stated that it is “fundamental” to see this public in contexts beyond the religious and electoral, as citizens.
The last consultation carried out by DataFolha, two weeks ago, shows that the PT member's disapproval grew among evangelicals, from 38% to 43%, an increase of five percentage points from December to March. The president's approval rating went from 26% to 25%. (COLORBORATED BY MARCELO DE MORAES)
