President, First Lady and ministers praised Brazil’s historic performance in the games, with 89 medals and 5th place in the ranking
The president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), First Lady Janja Lula da Silva and government ministers published messages this Sunday (September 8) congratulating the Brazilian athletes who participated in the Paris Paralympic Games.
Brazil won a record number of medals in a single edition of the Paralympics and finished the tournament in 5th place in the medal table, ahead of Paralympic powers such as Ukraine. Brazilian athletes won 89 podiums, reaching a total of 25 gold, 26 silver and 38 bronze.
On his official Instagram profile, President Lula published the medal table won by Brazil and said that the athletes “they put on a show”.
Janja, in turn, mentioned two-time Paralympic champions Fernando Rufino, in canoeing, and Maria Carolina Santiago, in swimming. Both carried the Brazilian flag at the closing ceremony of the games.
“The whole of Brazil was thrilled and immensely proud of each of your achievements in these Paralympic Games”declared the first lady.
Sports Minister André Fufuca used Brazil’s performance at the Paralympic Games as an example of the positive impact of the Bolsa Atleta program, which offers financial support to Brazilian athletes.
“What all of Brazil’s medals in France have in common is the presence of the Bolsa Atleta program, a direct sponsorship program from the Federal Government. Of the 280 Brazilian athletes in Paris, 274 are part of the Ministry of Sports program (97.8%), including all of the medalists.”he declared.
