President stated in an interview that the government is studying whether there is excessive spending on social programs, but did not indicate what cuts should be made
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) once again criticized this Tuesday (June 18, 2024) the volume of tax exemptions granted by the Union to some sectors of the economy. He said that the government is carrying out a study to assess whether there is excessive spending on some social programs and that it is willing to discuss the Union budget with the “greater seriousness”.
“What makes me worried is that the same people who say that we have to stop spending, have R$546 billion in exemption and tax relief. It is the rich who take over part of the country’s budget and they complain about what is being spent on the poor people. That’s why I said don’t come and ask me to make any adjustments to the most humble people in the country.”said in an interview with “CBN Newspaper”.
The president also stated that he wanted to discuss with businesspeople from the 17 sectors of the economy that had the payroll tax relief extended in 2024 as he did not consider it normal that they could receive the benefit without compensation, which would only serve to increase companies’ profits.
“We just approved the exemption. What stability do they guarantee? What salary increase do they guarantee? None. They just take tax exemptions to increase profits and think this is normal. We think this is not normal”he said.
