President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom, spoke this Monday (5), in a meeting at Palácio do Planalto, about partnerships for the elimination of diseases and production of Brazilian vaccines against dengue. The Brazilian presidency of the G20, which created a health working group, was also the subject of the meeting. The Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, participated in the meeting.
According to information from Palácio do Planalto, which did not give details about ongoing initiatives, Adhanom stated that Brazil could be a supplier of the vaccine against dengue, through the Butantan Institute and the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). Currently, the only vaccine available in the Unified Health System (SUS), incorporated last year, is Qdenga, produced by the Japanese laboratory Takeda.

Tedros Adhanom also stated, according to the government, that the WHO intends to provide all possible support to Brazil in eliminating diseases such as tuberculosis, leprosy, Chagas disease and diseases transmitted from mother to child, such as HIV. These are examples of so-called socially determined diseases.
Next Wednesday (7), the director general of the WHO will participate, with minister Nísia Trindade, in the launch of a national program to combat these diseases.
G20
The WHO director general and President Lula also discussed the presidency of the G20, which has a health working group. They also spoke about the conclusion of the work of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body in the preparation and negotiation of an international instrument for the prevention, preparation and response to pandemics. In this body, Brazil acts as a representative of the Americas in the group responsible for coordinating the work.
In a statement, Palácio do Planalto highlighted that Adhanom thanked President Lula for his support and asked that the G20 be able to guide the discussion on health financing. Lula highlighted that he considers it necessary to have a better tax policy, which can increase financing for the sector.
