After the presidential elections in Belarus on August 9, 2020, in which Alexander Lukashenko won for the sixth time, who, according to the Central Election Commission of the republic, gained 80.1% of the vote, massive opposition protests began in the country. The results of the vote were not recognized by the US and EU countries.
Tikhanovskaya also disagreed with the election results, called on the world community to support the demonstrators and left the country. In October of the same year, she was put on the interstate wanted list by the Belarusian authorities.
