President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko instructed border guards to completely close the border with Ukraine. It is reported by Telegram-channel BELTA.
According to him, the reason was “a huge amount of weapons” coming from Ukraine to Belarus.
On July 1, Lukashenka spoke about Ukraine’s “melting” sovereignty.
Prior to this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine accused Belarus of disrespecting democratic values after the country’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU) Eastern Partnership program.
Against this background, the Verkhovna Rada proposed to the government to terminate any relations with Belarus, with the exception of contacts on refugees and political prisoners. The bill is supposed to approve the non-recognition of the official results of the presidential elections in Belarus in 2020 and recognize the Lukashenka regime as a threat to international security.
Earlier, the head of the State Border Service of Ukraine Serhiy Deyneko said about the need to strengthen the state border with Belarus due to possible threats to national security. According to him, we are talking about both strengthening the security system, including rapid response units, and the construction of engineering and technical structures.
