The striker was key for Uruguay in the two qualifying games.

Uruguay thrashed the eliminated team 4-1 Venezuela this Tuesday in Montevideo and, by dint of good football, climbed to fourth place in the South American qualifying round, the last one that gives direct access to the Qatar-2022 World Cup.

The party at Montevideo’s Centenario stadium was sparked off by Rodrigo Bentancur in the first minute of play and was followed by goals from Giorgian De Arrascaeta (23), Edinson Cavani (45+1) and Luis Suárez from a penalty (53). Josef Martínez scored the discount for Venezuela at 65.

Suarez’s brand

Suarez was a star in both of Uruguay’s recent qualifying games, scoring against Paraguay, and then against Venezuela. He thus reached 67 points, being the top scorer in the history of the Celeste.

These two goals also helped him break a record that belonged to his friend Lionel Messi, as the top scorer in the South American tie.

Messi, absent from Argentina’s recent games, has 27 goals, while Suarez has 28 goals.
