Frenchman Karim Benzema, forward for Real Madrid, has been chosen as the best player in the 2021/22 Champions League by the Uefa panel of technical observersreported the continental body this Tuesday.
Benzema was one of the decisive players for Italian Carlo Ancelotti’s team to win the fourteenth title in its history in the top continental competition and the fifth of his career since joining the white club from Lyon.
The French attacker, who this Monday joined the concentration of the French team in Clairefontaine after Sunday’s celebrations with the local authorities and the fans at the Santiago Bernabéu, was proclaimed top scorer in the Champions League with 15 goals. Ten of those goals were achieved in the knockout rounds. He scored two hat-tricks in a row in the second leg of the round of 16 against PSG and in the first leg of the quarter-finals against Chelsea, he continued in the second leg with the goal in extra time that finished off the defending champions, and against Manchester City he added a brace in the Etihad and another penalty goal in extra time to give Real Madrid a pass to the final in Paris.
Benzema is in third place among all-time Champions League scorers along with Pole Robert Lewandowski, with 86 goals, just behind Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo (140) and Argentine Leo Messi (125).

Uefa also chose the ideal eleven of the seasonin which, along with Benzema, are his teammates Thibaut Courtois, chosen as the best player in the final, Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior, scorer of the winning goal against Liverpool, who have four players on the team.
