The war in Bolivia between the two internal lines of the Movement towards Socialism (MAS) has entered a stage that embarrasses many of its militants. The two opposing political leaders, Evo Morales and Luis Arce, are being accused of sexual crimes. While the accusation against Morales for “statutory aggravation with human trafficking” continues with the support of the Bolivian Government, and the prosecution has called the former president to testify, a woman has denounced Arce for sexual abuse and harassment to get her to have an abortion. “I have videos, audios, chat and his scarf and witnesses,” Yéssica Villarroel stated before the press. This is a counterattack by Morales: Villarroel appeared at the conference backed by one of the former president’s trusted men, deputy Héctor Arce, who has already been behind other serious complaints against the Bolivian ruler.
The woman said that she had a six-month clandestine relationship with President Arce, during which there were supposedly “forces.” The relationship began, according to the complainant, when Aerce offered her a position in the State and ended when she became pregnant. “Assume the investigation: he asked me to lose that child and three days later I had an accident,” he alleged. Because of this motorcycle accident, according to her, her pregnancy ended. He also noted that, after it, he was offered a position in an embassy.
Deputy Héctor Arce announced that he will request the president’s prosecution for sexual abuse, human trafficking, and having used state property without a justified purpose. “An authority cannot use the position of president, the presidential sash and the offices of the Casa Grande del Pueblo to have sexual relations,” he alleged. So far the Government has not responded to the accusations.
The complaint coincides with the progress of the judicial investigation against Morales, who in 2016 allegedly had a daughter with a 15-year-old teenager. Morales was already investigated for this same reason in 2019 and a prosecutor from the city of Yacuiba, where the alleged victim lived, rejected the lawsuit. Now, the Government has reactivated it and the prosecution has summoned Morales to appear on October 10 to testify about the alleged crime; He has done the same with the young woman’s parents.
On October 8, the police notified the former president in person in an office where he carries out his duties as the main leader of the Chapare coca growers federations, his political stronghold and home. “This [caso] obeys a mandate from the empire… Here it is not a problem between Lucho [Arce] and Evo. Unfortunately, Lucho obeys the empire,” Morales declared shortly after receiving the summons. He also pointed out that “the people know that it is clearly a political persecution. “We are going to defend ourselves.” And he assured that he has more than “200 lawyers” willing to represent him for free. “I’m not going to escape,” he warned.
The Government filed four lawsuits against Morales, hours apart, a few days after he marched against Arce due to the economic crisis and to demand that he be qualified as a candidate in next year’s elections. The former president has attributed the government offensive to his advantage in the polls. When a journalist asked him if he had had a daughter in 2016, he said in response: “Don’t mess with the family. “Family is sacred.” Morales is single, but he has several recognized children with different women. As for Arce, he came to office married, but separated at some point during his term. In Bolivia, politicians normally enjoy great privacy and it is rare for their personal lives to become a matter of public debate.
The war between Arce and Morales has been escalating as the moment approaches when the MAS must register a candidate for the next elections. In addition to these crossed sexual accusations, a process is pending over the ownership of the MAS that is prolonged because the justice system and the Electoral Court receive pressure from both sides, which, after so many years in power, each have influence over certain parties. of the State.
