Lucid Motors will use Nvidia’s auto-level computer chips in its vehicles to enable advanced driving assistance and autonomous driving capabilities, the two companies announced Tuesday. The automaker’s current and future range will be based on the platform Hyperion Drive end-to-end from Nvidia.
Hyperion is the latest version of Nvidia’s Drive platform that allows automakers to customize their driving capabilities, with Orin which it is the system-on-a-chip from the chip manufacturersimilar to the chip Full Self-Driving by Tesla or al Mobileye EyeQ from Intel.
This new hardware will form the basis for a new suite of driving capabilities, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), automated parking and autonomous driving, at least according to the two companies.
The new Lucid Motors project
Lucid Motors released its first electric vehicle, the Lucid Air, last year and is already working on a sequel, which will be a long-range electric SUV codenamed Project Gravity, however the company said it recent it was delaying the launch of its Gravity SUV to 2024This is due to disruptions in the supply chain and the global shortage of chips.
The higher trim levels of the Lucid Air, Dream Edition and Grand Touring, come with the automaker’s DreamDrive Pro ADAS, which includes 14 cameras, five radars, 12 ultrasound and lidar sensors, which will likely serve as the basis for a hands-free driving function conditional at some point in the near future.
Lucid is the latest automaker to strike a deal with Nvidia, the San Jose-based chip maker has indeed taken a serious road in the automotive industry in recent years, including partnerships with Jaguar-Land Rover, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, TuSimple, Cruise, Zoox and a number of Chinese electric vehicle startups.
All this as NVIDIA is among the first companies to strongly believe in the electric transition or rather, in that future where everything will be automated and / or managed by AI.
