France, the archbishop of Paris resigns: the letter to the Pope would have reached Rome yesterday
Monsignor Michel Aupetit, 70 years old, archbishop of Paris since December 2017, he presented his resignation to the Pope. Confirming the advances of Le Figaro, told La Croix that he had handed his office “into the hands of the Holy Father because it was he who gave it to him”. In this regard, he specified that he did not use the word “resignation”, although the consequence could be the same. He met with Cardinal Ouellet, prefect of the Congregation of Bishops, in Rome last week to discuss the matter.
On Monday, November 22, he announced his planned resignation to his small episcopal council. His resignation letter addressed to Pope francesco arrived in Rome yesterday. An article that reveals a long-time relationship with a woman dating back to 2012, published by the Le Point website on November 22 and by the magazine on November 25 – a report that the archbishop formally denied the seriousness of this newspaper and of which he would have warned his hierarchy in 2012 – would be one of the reasons for his resignation.
