Lorena Wiebes has won the Ronde van Drenthe for the second year in a row. The Team DSM cyclist was by far the strongest in the bunch sprint after a ride over 156 kilometers from Assen to Hoogeveen.
Wiebes did not let go during the four climbs of the VAM mountain and fought her way back into the peloton 20 kilometers before the finish after a flat tire, with the help of her teammates. Elisa Balsamo, the reigning world champion from Italy, finished second. Lotte Kopecky finished third. The cyclist from Belgium won Strade Bianche last week.
,,I had to win this sprint”, said Wiebes after the finish. ,,My teammates have worked so hard for me. I decided to start the sprint early. So maybe I could surprise Balsamo a bit. The room was on the left. I’m glad I was able to finish it.”
