They will receive training in the use of new technologies and will be attended to at the hostel 24 hours a day.
Lorca City Council obtained a grant of 880,000 euros from European Next Generation funds for comprehensive care for the vulnerable population.
The mayor, Diego José Mateos, said that during this year and in 2023 three different programs will be developed. The first of them, called the Social Digital Access Point, endowed with an item of 224,000 euros, will serve so that people at risk of social exclusion can be incorporated into the use of new technologies to carry out procedures with the administrations electronically.
The second, with an item of 360,000 euros, will be used for the digitization of immigrants since “a digital gap has been detected with this sector of the population, the most vulnerable.” Mateos explained that due to “the lack of capacity of the administrations to carry out the procedures they need, there are aids that cannot be processed quickly or do not come to fruition.”
Both programs will be carried out in a coordinated manner by the departments of Social Services and Diversity, which “have detected many people who have difficulties coping with new technologies” at a time when “practically all procedures with public administrations they have been digitized“, explained the mayor.
The last of the programs, called ‘Elio-Hogar Low Demand Center’, obtained 300,000 euros in funding and will allow the municipal transient shelter to be open 24 hours a day to welcome homeless people who are passing through Lorca to offer them a basic and dignified attention not only at night, as it has been up to now.
The agreement with Cáritas will be extended to “correct complicated situations of people who are waiting for the shelter to open during the day to clean up or to be able to rest.”
Mateos said that with the subsidies granted, “an important step forward will be taken to improve social care in our municipality” with “innovative programs that will improve the care provided to different groups.”
