The VW Passat debuted in 1973 and ushered in a new era at Volkswagen. After a short time it became one of the most popular company cars, especially as a station wagon. Now the ninth generation is about to start.
DOnce upon a time, 50 years ago, the Passat beat the Golf. He embodies the long overdue renewal of Volkswagen. For far too long, all models had stuck to the original Beetle concept, engine and drive at the rear, the engines were air-cooled.
Then the Passat came along and from then on did everything differently than the 1600 and 411 models that it was supposed to replace. Engine and drive at the front, installed lengthways and water-cooled. At just under 4.20 meters with a wheelbase of 2.47 stands a hatchback sedan, directly derived from the Audi 80.
