The Secretary of Security and Emergencies of the Department of Justice of the Valencian government is called Emilio Arguesobut in the Community it is also known as “Cameleón Argüeso”. He is a police commissioner, but he hasn’t served as police commissioner in years because he is a textbook climber. He was in the Socialist Youthwas general secretary of the New Generations of the PP in Elche and ended up in Citizenswhere he appeared as secretary of party organization in the Valencian Community. When Ciudadanos broke up, he was one of those who acted as a bridge with the wreckage of the formation so that they ended up in the PP, as he himself did, after successfully carrying out that dirty job.
According to your open agenda, and remember Jordi Amat in The Countryon the day that the devastating cold drop began that brought the tragedy to his autonomy, he held a single meeting with a subordinate, the head of Public Entertainment, Recreational Activities and Bullfighting Celebrations. He began to take care of the dana the day after the disaster. It took four days to approve the coordination of the local police. Previously, it had taken almost thirteen hours to warn people of the danger, which caused many victims.
Also coinciding with the beginning of the disaster, the PSOE and other parties, to its left and right, those that support the government, decided not to postpone the change in Congress that guarantees them even greater control of the Board of Directors of RTVE, a public body hijacked by politicians, now in a more crude way. The figure of the political commissar is reinforced, now better paid. Before they received generous payments per session, now they will be released with a salary of up to one hundred thousand euros per year. Not even what was happening in Levante sensitized them to postpone the definitive assault on the public media and democracy itself, live and direct.
In the anger that erupted in Paiporta against politicians and institutions – including the Monarchy, although Philip VI he comes out as strengthened as his father on 23-F, achieving a popular legitimacy that he did not have – the extreme right took advantage of the opportunity, but above all, the enormous disconnection between the rulers and the governed, between society and the political class, came to light. A universal problem, although in Spain it has its own characteristics.
The old system of political representation has long since collapsed and is devastated
The old system of political representation collapsed a long time ago and is devastated. It is old, nineteenth-century, anachronistic and carries within it the germ of self-destruction. The storm is taking away democracy, like the houses in Valencia. People have their own concerns and delegate the management of public affairs, the interests of the State, to politicians. It is true that it is passive, sometimes complicit, and that the line that separates the rulers and the governed is very lukewarm. But also that the political class has become a strange unpopular entity that is distant and alien to the interests of citizens. It is endogamous, its members reproduce in a closed and dark world of interests that often have nothing to do with the general ones. It is sectarian, its priority interest is the control and maintenance of power, denying evidence, lying and prioritizing the electoral wear of the enemy, external or internal, theatricalizing, because it carries out a daily representation for which control of the media is fundamental. Although in reality it forms a caste, the one that was denounced in the squares during 15-M and that was perpetuated after that explosion of collective rebellion against a collapsed and unjust system. “They don’t represent us,” they shouted. The representation of the absolute disconnection between representatives and represented continues a decade later, in institutions and governments. It’s even bigger. And in this drift, people confuse the right and the left, rightly so, because it is very difficult to distinguish them, as if they were buried by the mud and sludge that plagues Valencians.
The left is not responsible for this terrifying neo-fascism, for this return to the caves, to the world of ignorance, superstition and every man for himself, prior to the Enlightenment. Of this regression that makes the darkest part of the human condition prevail. But its failure is one of its explanations. Throughout the planet, starting with the USAwhere they just brought back to the White House a monster, a corrupt man, a heartless man who hates the poor who vote for him and encouraged a coup d’état with fatalities after losing an election. But did anyone see big political differences between Trump and Harris, enough to vote for the candidate? People are tired of the lesser evil and in that boredom the worst wins.
What we continue to call the left is a sob from the past, a fossil that does not understand what is happening or have answers to so much challenge, starting with the implosion of nature. This perplexity is already a great underlying problem that disqualifies it as an alternative to a complex world and a shocking future, with the ghost of the horrors of the 1930s of the 20th century, this time more terrifying, due to the development of nuclear weapons and the environmental self-destruction. But no less serious is its formal problem, of operating mechanisms, because it is the one that most discredits the left before citizens.
Utopia has disappeared from the ideology of humanity. People neither aspire nor believe in revolution, they do not demand major transformations from the left, reforms, good government and security are enough. A century ago, when I dreamed of storming the skies, there was also a disconnection between rulers and the governed, between leaders and citizens. But it was more cultural, also economic. There was enormous illiteracy, it was assumed that the representative was a person better prepared for that intermediation role.
A long time has passed: the industrial revolution, the Welfare State and the generalization of education. The relationship has been reversed. Politicians, professionals of power who are oblivious to the merit and ability that Administration officials are supposed to have, are no more prepared than citizens, who for the most part have much more knowledge and judgment. They can admit that they are wrong, they bear their quarrels patiently, they think that they are a necessary evil, but they do not tolerate their imposture.
This discredit does not greatly affect what we call the right, which is the acceptance of the established power and its interests, the suspicion of change, order and conservative morality. It benefits the extreme right, it plays chaos in which it finds electoral benefits, a few days ago in USA. But for what is considered left, which is no longer more than an imaginary evocation, where only values remain lost in the mists of time that no longer resist a simple revision with reality, it is simply devastating.
That model of representation and its instruments – parties, executives, leaders, leaders, liberated people – no longer works, it smells like the putrid air in many areas of Valencia. It’s like driving a century-old car on the modern highways of post-industrial modernity. Vertical organizations that produce vertigo in times when horizontal ones are demanded. They distribute power as they please, using the citizens’ votes as spoils. Responsible for a colonized and ineffective Administration where the priority is to place their own, with discretion and unreason as norms. What does a bullfighter look like as a vice president, a chameleon like Arguero managing catastrophes and commanding geologists or engineers, a political commissioner at RTVE, at the CGPJ or managing a hospital? When do we admit such nonsense, until we reach administrative dystopia? If it weren’t so catastrophic, as we are seeing, it would be laughable.
When you say that this is intolerable, they come with the argument that these are the laws of democracy and that changing politicians for technicians is technocracy. Is it technocracy that the most qualified people are in relevant positions and that politicians elected by universal suffrage dedicate themselves to approving laws, discussing in parliaments and executing decisions supported by the work of technicians, experts and specialists? Well long live technocracy.
We must save the planet from its self-destruction, stopping this madness in which greed and ignorance are mixed. We must save democracy from the political caste, a worm that devours it from within. We must bury the left, which is an unburied corpse, like those of Valenciaand start thinking about new ways to defend justice, progress and reason. Utopia? Of course, that essential engine in History. We are not in a hurry nor are we ambitious, much less foolish: in these times the revolution is nothing more than common sense.
