Suda51 And James Gunn both have stated that they have nothing to do with the new remake of Lollipop Chainsaw.
Yesterday, the executive producer of the original game Yoshimi Yasuda announced that his new company Dragami Games will make a remake of the 2012 cult.
However, despite being the two biggest names tied to the original title, neither Creative Director Suda51 nor co-writer James Gunn will be involved in the new project.
In reference to an article asking if the two were related to the remake, Gunn tweeted: “To answer the question of the article, neither I nor Suda51 are currently involved in this project. I first heard about it from Suda a couple [di] weeks ago“.
Guardians of the Galaxy director added: “I neither approve nor condemn it! I just don’t know anything about it. But as the articles are starting to name our names, I think it is important to clarify that no one has ever contacted us about it.“.
Following Gunn’s tweets, Suda later said: “neither he nor I are involved in this project in any way, and Grasshopper Manufacture has nothing to do with development or anything“.
In the statement announcing the remake, Yasuda appeared to belittle Suda’s role in the original game, suggesting she had a more advisory role.
“As Suda-san was very busy managing the development of other projects at the time, I served as director and producer, creating a joint development team made up of staff from Grasshopper Manufacture and Kadokawa Games and directly overseeing the development.“said Yasuda.
“Suda-san supervised the game’s design and oversaw the project as an executive producer“.
Yasuda’s claims seem at odds with the game’s credits, which point to Yasuda (and not Suda) as executive producer and Suda as creative director.
Additionally, while Yasuda claims to have “served as director and producer,” the game’s credits list Grasshopper’s Tomo Ikeda and Masa Shidara as director and producer, respectively.
While stating that most of the original staff are working on the remake, Yasuda also stated that some elements of the remake will be different from the original 2012 game.
“For example, the original game had 15 licensed songs used in the soundtrack, but sadly it’s hard for us to implement all of them this time around.“, has explained. “As a result, apart from a few licensed songs, the soundtrack will consist of new music“.
“Also, as we have access to higher spec consoles, we will take a more realistic approach to graphics this time around“.
“In any case, our goal is to make the game easier for players who want to play Lollipop Chainsaw. We invite you to look forward to the release in 2023“.
